Greek Chicken Gyro Kebabs Recipe

A traditional Greek chicken gyro recipe, tender chicken flavoured with a herby lemon and yoghurt marinade, served in a Greek flat bread with fresh salad leaves, tomatoes, lemon herby chips and a dollop of tzatziki sauce. This dish is perfect for a quick after work dinner or for a special occasion and ideal for a barbecue

Recipe Ingreds

chicken skewers

  • salt (to taste)
  • 2 whole tomatoes
  • black pepper (to taste)
  • 2 tbsp sunflower oil
  • 2 fillet chicken thighs boneless
  • 40 grams Salad leaves
  • 20 ml natural yoghurt
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 0.5 whole lemon
  • 1 tbsp white wine vinegar
  • 5 tsp oregano (dried)
  • 1 tsp ground coriander
  • 0.25 tsp Onion salt
  • 1 sprig fresh basil
  • 2 tsp thyme (dried)
  • 3 cloves garlic
  • 0.25 tsp celery salt
  • 1 whole onions
  • 1 tub tzatziki
  • 2 whole greek flatbreads
  • 0.25 tsp Clear honey

Greek Lemon Chips

  • black pepper (to taste)
  • 400 grams potatoes
  • salt (to taste)
  • 1 tbsp sunflower oil
  • 1 tsp oregano (dried)
  • 0.25 tsp dill (dried)
  • 0.25 tsp thyme (dried)
  • 2 tsp fresh lemon juice
  • 0.25 tsp garlic salt
  • 0.25 tsp Onion salt

Recipe with pictures Steps

Step 1

  • soak the skewers in water
  • peel and crush the garlic using the garlic crusher or chop finely
  • wash and finely chop the basil
  • squeeze the lemon(s) .
  • add the yoghurt, oil, vinegar, oregano, coriander, honey, onion salt, thyme, celery salt, lemon juice, basil and garlic to the bowl
  • cut the chicken into chunks add to the marinade and stir
  • cover with cling film
  • refrigerate for at least two hours preferably overnight

Step 2

  • half fill a medium pan with water and boil
  • peel the potatoes
  • cut into chips
  • add to the boiling water
  • cook for 8 to 10 mins till soft

Step 3

  • add the oil, oregano, lemon juice, dill, thyme, garlic salt and onion salt to the bowl
  • set the oven to 180C 350F or gas mark 4
  • drain the chips and carefully add to the baking tray
  • pour the marinade over the chips and stir the chips to coat them
  • place the chips in the oven
  • cook for 20 mins or until golden brown

Step 4

  • coat the roasting tin in foil
  • peel and slice the onions
  • add the onions to the roasting tin with a spot of oil

step 5

  • remove the chicken from the fridge
  • heat the grill
  • place the chicken on the skewers
  • cover the ends of the skewers with with foil
  • balance the skewers on the roasting tray
  • place under the grill and cook the skewers until the meat is golden brown and the juices run clear
  • turn the skewers regularly to obtain an even colour
  • These skewers are ideal for cooking on a barbecue

step 6

  • check the chips and turn regularly to ensure an even golden brown
  • wrap the flat breads in foil and place on the bottom of the grill to warm

Step 7

  • wash the salad leaves and add to a bowl
  • wash the tomatoes and cut into chunks
  • add the tomatoes to the salad
  • remove the chicken from under the grill
  • remove the flat breads from the bottom of the grill
  • remove the chips from the oven

Step 8

  • place the flat bread on the strip of baking paper
  • place the lettuce and tomatoes on the flat bread
  • remove the meat from the skewer and place on top of the salad sprinkle with onions
  • add a dollop of tzatziki
  • add some chips to the flatbread roll the flat bread and use the baking paper to secure the roll
  • serve the gyro with tzatziki and any extra chips

How to make chicken Gyros at home from scratch

A delicious recipe for homemade gyro wraps with seasoned potato chips. First make the marinade by combining the yogurt, oil, vinegar, and a blend of herbs and spices. Slice the chicken into chunks and then add it to the marinade cover and refrigerate to infuse the flavours, . Marinate the chicken for at least 2 hours preferably overnight Parboil and coat potato wedges in a zesty marinade before grilling. Meanwhile, prepare a refreshing salad with tomatoes and salad leaves. Thread the chicken onto the skewers and place on a grill pan covered with foil.   • you can leave the chicken fillets whole and the skin on marinade and then bake in the oven, shredding the chicken before putting it in the wrap
  • you can cook the chicken kebabs on a rotisserie or spit over a fire or in an oven
  • You can barbeque the kebabs on a traditional outdoor grill

Ingredients for our Greek chicken gyro recipe

This dish is made from simple ingredients, all readily available in the supermarket or at your local shops, it does require quite a few herbs and spices but these are also readily available 

Chicken Marinade Ingredients

Yoghurt - use any type of yogurt, we use a thick Greek bio yoghurt

Herbs and spices - a mixture of dried and fresh herbs, this is our unique blend but feel free to make changes

lemon - use fresh lemon juice 

Oil - we use olive oil because it is healthier but you can use other cooking oils, like vegetable or sunflower

Greek gyros ingredients

chicken - we use chicken thighs for this recipe as they have extra taste and are cheaper but you can use chicken breasts if you prefer 

Bread - We use Greek flatbreads for this dish as they are readily available in supermarket and make a change from other wraps, but feel free to use tortilla wraps or pita breads 

tzatziki sauce - We use the dips readily available in the supermarket but the recipe for a homemade tzatziki sauce is simple to make so feel free to make your own 

Salad - use any salad leaves you have available and fresh tomatoes ordinary or cherry tomatoes are fine for this dish 

What to serve with our authentic chicken gyros 

We serve our gyros on a traditional flat bread, smothered in a cucumber tzatziki sauce topped with salad leaves tomatoes, grilled onion and crispy lemon herb chips. You can alter the filling to meet your requirements here are some of our suggestions

For a healthy chicken gyro dinner leave out the chips and add extra salad serve in a pita bread to reduce calories 

For a super healthy option make a traditional Greek salad and serve the gyro meat with the salad

We have used supermarket tzatziki dip for convenience but you can easily make your own sauce
